The Border Collie was developed in the border country between Scotland and England for herding livestock, especially sheep. They are the ultimate workaholics of the dog world.

The smartest dog

Border Collies are consistently ranked as the most intelligent of all domestic dogs. They are capable of learning an incredible number of words and complex tasks, often anticipating their owner’s next move.

Intense Focus and Energy

This breed is famous for “the eye”—a piercing stare used to control and intimidate sheep. This intensity carries over into their play; they will fetch a ball until they collapse if you let them. They need hours of physical and mental activity every single day.

Not for every home

While they are loyal and stunning, Border Collies are not recommended for sedentary owners. Without a “job” to do, they can become neurotic or destructive. They thrive in active households that enjoy hiking, dog sports, and advanced training challenges.
