The Dachshund, often affectionately called the “sausage dog” or “wiener dog,” was originally bred to hunt badgers. Their elongated bodies and short legs were specifically designed to allow them to tunnel into burrows.

Distinctive Appearance

Dachshunds come in two sizes (Standard and Miniature) and three coat types (Smooth, Wirehaired, and Longhaired). Regardless of their variety, they all share that iconic long back and alert, intelligent expression.

Spirited Personality

Don’t let their size fool you; Dachshunds are incredibly brave and sometimes even a bit feisty. They are deeply loyal to their owners but can be quite independent. They have a loud, deep bark that belies their small stature, making them surprisingly good watchdogs.

Health and Care

Because of their long backs, it is critical to keep Dachshunds at a healthy weight to avoid spinal issues. They enjoy moderate exercise and love to play. They are affectionate companions that thrive on attention and will often follow their owners from room to room.
