The Yorkshire Terrier, or ‘Yorkie,’ originated in the county of Yorkshire in Northern England. Though they are now considered one of the most glamorous toy breeds, they were originally developed as sturdy ratters to hunt vermin in clothing mills.
Glamour and Spirit
Yorkies are best known for their long, silky, floor-length coat that is steel blue on the body and golden tan on the head and chest. Despite their tiny size, they carry themselves with an air of confidence and importance. They have a compact, well-proportioned build and bright, inquisitive eyes.
A Feisty Personality
Don’t let the elegant appearance fool you; Yorkies are true terriers at heart. They are brave, spirited, and sometimes a bit bossy. They are highly intelligent and quick to learn, though they can be independent. They are very affectionate with their owners and love to be the center of attention.
Living with a Yorkie
Yorkies are ideal for apartment living and city life due to their small size. They are active indoors and don’t require massive amounts of outdoor exercise, though they do enjoy daily walks and playtime. Their long coat requires significant maintenance and daily brushing. Many owners prefer a shorter ‘puppy cut’ for easier care. They are big personalities in tiny packages that bring lots of life to any home.
